• Door always open for Okoye, the others
Super Eagles goalkeeping coach Ike Shorunmu says Francis Uzoho is Nigeria’s number one between the sticks. He added, however, that other goalkeepers still have a chance to challenge for the number one position.
Shorunmu noted that Uzoho’s presence between the Eagles’ goal post in the last two USA friendlies and AFCON qualifiers boosted his confidence.
He urged all national team goalkeepers including NPFL players to improve their game and challenge Uzoho for the job, saying such rivalry will make players better.
According to Shorunmu, the Super Eagles have the prospect of becoming better under the current foreign manager due to the abundance of talented players in the Super Eagles.
The former Super Eagles goalkeeper has urged football-loving Nigerians to continue supporting and believing in the team despite their failure to qualify for the World Cup.
“Uzoho, from my observations, needs more encouragement and support. I need to change the training strategy to boost his confidence.
“It’s been a long time since I left national team duties and so much has changed. But I have to keep focusing on building the goalkeeping department,” he said.
On Maduka Okoye, Shorunmu said he called up Watford’s new goalkeeper ahead of recent games, adding that Okoye opted out of games to stabilize with his new English club.
“I think it’s a matter of mind and there’s no need to bother him. We have to wait for him to get on the right track,” he added.
