Tuesday’s Trivia: Did you know Sai Pallavi wasn’t the first choice for the role of Malar in Premam?


The 2015 hit Malayalam film, Premam, directed by Alphonse Putharen, was a romantic drama starring Nivin Pauly, Sai Pallavi, Madonna Sebastian and Anupama Parameswaran. Premam was highly rated and was a massive box office hit in Kollywood. The most beloved character in the movie was Malar, played by Sai Pallavi who also made the actress famous throughout the industry. But did you know she wasn’t the first choice for the role of Malar?

During an interaction with fans on social media, the director revealed that “In the beginning when I wrote the script it was in Malayalam. I wanted Asin to star in the Malayalam version of Malar. The character was from Fort Kochi… I couldn’t contact Asin. Nivin also tried. Then I gave up the idea and wrote it in Tamizh. It’s at the beginning of the script. I studied in Ooty when I was too young, then I did my film studies in Chennai. That’s why the strong Tamizh connection.”

However, things didn’t go as Alphonse wanted nonetheless, he nabbed a diamond with Sai Pallavi as Malar. She earned a place in the hearts of the audience with her strong performance as a teacher in the film. Her lack of makeup and her natural beauty have kept fans forever, Malar is one of those Pallavi characters that fans will cherish forever.

Premam is a romantic story that explores the infatuation and love of George (Nivin Pauly) from his school days to his youthful period. The film depicts the love between a student and a teacher, and it takes you through some sweet romantic moments between the two and ultimately lands at a very hard breakup.
