Directed by Kabir Khan, Ranveer Singh starring ’83 hit the big screen today. The entire ’83 team is receiving love and praise from all sides. Recently, a report suggested that it was not Ranveer but Arjun Kapoor who was the first choice for the role of Kapil Dev in 1983.

Yes, you read that right. The screenplay for the film went first to Ranveer and then to his best friend Arjun Kapoor. Later, he returned to Singh once Kabir took over.

A business source told Pinkvilla that Arjun did not attend the premiere of one of his closest friends while filming for Kuttey, but Kapoor could have taken a few minutes for Ranveer as he was a great moment for the actor.

The project was announced in 2014 but later the director was changed to Kabir Khan in 2017. After Sanjay Puran Singh Chauhan wrote the first draft, he and Vishnuvardhan Induri approached Arjun who liked the script but wanted the filmmaker Aditya Chopra is co-producing it. Chopra liked it so much he wanted to buy the script, but Sanjay was keen to direct it himself. Arjun even did look tests. Arjun roped Vikramaditya, Madhu and Vikas as they were close to him. They kept calling Sanjay at their office but didn’t want to discuss the script.

The report further suggested that when 1983 was officially announced at an event, Sanjay was told by a friend that he had been replaced and they were considering Ranveer playing the role of the legendary cricketer.

The business source praised Ranveer and said he was brilliant as Kapil Dev.
