David De Gea backed to stay as Manchester United’s first-choice goalkeeper over Dean Henderson

David De Gea will remain Manchester United’s first-choice keeper against Dean Henderson this season, Gary Pallister predicts.

Henderson secured a regular starting spot last season and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer named the England international has his first choice ahead of the new term, only for the player to test positive for Covid and suffer the long-standing effects of the disease.

De Gea, who played in the Europa League final last season, has subsequently started the season between the sticks and has been in fine form, making some excellent saves recently against Southampton and Wolves.

Pallister was talking to Manchester Evening News exclusively via FreeSuperTips and feels the position is the veteran to lose now after his strong start to the season.

“I think David kind of got it back at the end of last season and got the nod so far this year.

“Dean made a few mistakes towards the end, but I think it’s good that you have two goalkeepers with a lot of quality.

“We saw the saves David made against Wolves, and it looked like the De Gea of old who made those saves regularly. Right now I think David deserves to keep the gloves and it’s up to Dean to take this place again.

“De Gea has done a lot for Manchester United, he’s been player of the year for several seasons in the past. He’s had a sticky patch and Dean is young so he has plenty of time to improve, but it’s It’s great to have competition for places.

“They have to take a chance when they get it, and David is doing that right now.”

De Gea hopes to start again when Manchester United return to Old Trafford to face Newcastle in the Premier League on Saturday.
