DC first offered the villainous role in Batgirl to another action star before moving on to Brendan Fraser.
Brendan Fraser wasn’t DC’s first choice for lead villain role in upcoming Bat girl movie.
According to Borys Kit Hollywood journalist, action star Sylvester Stallone was first approached by the comic book company for the role. However, “things just didn’t work out,” which led to DC concluding with Brendan Fraser instead. Kit also revealed that the film will include Fraser’s villainous son, who falls in love with Leslie Grace’s Barbara Gordon / Batgirl.

As for who Fraser is playing, The Mummy The star will play arsonist Garfield Lynns / Firefly. While there were reports that Fraser was playing gangster Carmine Falcone, Kit later confirmed he was playing the role of Firefly. Created by writer France Herron and artist Dick Sprang, the character made his pre-Crisis debut in Detective Comics # 184 in June 1952. A washed-out special effects artist, Lynns used his talents to commit crimes by setting up fake fires. However, after Crisis on Infinite Earths reset the timeline and continuity of DC Universe, it was given a darker origin, including abusive parents.
Fraser joins a steadily growing cast that includes Grace, Jacob Scipio in an unknown role, and JK Simmons as Commissioner James Gordon, reprising his role in Justice League and Zack Snyder’s Justice League. Bad boys for life directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah will direct, with a script by Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of a Harley Quinn) and Flash scribe Christina Hodson.
Bat girl will be the first live-action DC original film to go direct to HBO Max. (Not including Zack Snyder Justice League and Wonder Woman 1984, which opened in theaters simultaneously.) It’s part of WarnerMedia’s new strategy to send films based on lesser-known characters directly to the streamer, while the most popular retain theatrical releases.
Another film that will join Bat girl on HBO Max is Blue beetle, which will star Cobra Kai star Xolo Maridueña as Jaime Reyes, the titular hero’s third incarnation. However, concept art for the film released during DC FanDome indicates that Ted Kord – the second version of the character – will play a role in the film.
